Sustainability Mobility CloudApps SuMo: The Way Appcelerator Titanium is Helping Save the World
Developed through Appcelerator Titanium, CloudApps SuMo is an application designed to improve sustainability in a company, saving both money and the environment with proven efficacy. The app, available on the iPhone and iPad, brings together elements of social networking, game mechanics and sustainability to help companies achieve their sustainability goals. SuMo (Sustainability Momentum) provides a game-like interface to allow competition between employees to compare their sustainability level. The app provides each user with an experience bar that shows their progress towards advancing to the next level, their current level, and their rank relative to others. Users receive points and experience for actions such as replacing fluorescent light bulbs with LEDs. The app also provides badges as rewards for accomplishing specific sustainability goals. Though the application places emphasis on comparing peers with similar job roles, it also allows users to make connections and follow specific colleagues.
The application tracks the user’s activity to ensure that their current pattern of actions is aligned with goals for the month or if the user needs to change their ways in order to meet their goals. It also includes an RSS feed which updates the user on the activities and accomplishments of their peers; this public announcement drives users to compare themselves to one another and go above and beyond their sustainability goals to compete with one another. But the app does more than record and compare; it actively offers suggestions about how to change your habits or take particular actions to improve sustainability.
Users can see the corporate performance in real time and compare it to the corporate aim to see the way their individual actions aggregate to form a large difference. To give you an idea of the difference that’s made: companies that implement use of SuMo see an average of 9% savings and a typical return on their investment in less than 4 months with an average of 10% reduction in their annual carbon foot-print. Since it’s launch, SuMo has received plenty of positive response, and its developer, CloudApps, has plans to release versions for Android smartphones and tablets and enhance the app with innovative new features. The application currently utilizes the core Titanium framework in combination with an open source JavaScript charting module; for data storage it’s integrated with the CloudApps Sustainability Suite on the force.com platform through the REST API. SuMo future plans involve utilizing geolocation and push notifications, though they haven’t revealed much else. Future developments aside, if your company wants to go green and save green in the process, look no further than SuMo.
